Dear Parents, May 8, 2008
We have had a very good week in the Fifth
Grade! The students are working hard, staying focused, and behaving very well! I am going to miss this class!!
In Reading, we finished our last story for
the year, “My Side of the Mountain”. The students had to write about a meal that they would prepare, with only
food from the forest. They were quite interesting! In Grammar, we studied nouns and pronouns in prepositional phrases. We
also reviewed all of the parts of speech. We took our Spelling test today. Ask your child how he/she did. The next few days,
I will be testing the students for this theme. Then, we will begin some new reading projects.
In Math, we just finished a chapter on surface
area and volume. The students are doing very well with the formulas and understanding what they mean. Our next chapter will
be on ratio, probability, and percent.
In Science 5, we started our last unit,
which is on rocks and minerals. The students have read about the different properties of rocks, conducted an experiment on
the hardness of rocks, and began their rock collection, which is due at the end of the month. The students also have to identify
twenty- four rocks that are on the back table of my classroom. I have given two practice quizzes on them. Congratulations
to Monica, who scored 100% the first time! I have never had a student do that before.
In Religion, we are studying the sacrament
of Holy Orders and Matrimony. We began this chapter reading about how Jesus chose Peter to become the leader of the church.
We discussed what are some things that make a good leader. We defined “ordained”. We also learned about some of
the famous Popes in the history of the church.
I can’t tell you what we did in Art,
because it is a surprise for the mothers.
In Spanish, we are on our next unit, which
focuses on musical words.
Just a reminder for tomorrow, we will be
wearing our DARE t-shirts!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Haggerty
