HEALTH

  1. Nurse: The services of the district school nurse are available to us. If she can be of any assistance to you for health problems, please call 685-8683 and ask to speak to the nurse.
  2. Medication: No medication may be given to a child in school unless it is prescribed by a doctor. Parents must fill out the Authorization for Administration of Medication During School Hours Form before medication can be dispensed. This includes all prescription and non-prescription medicine.
  3. Illness: Please do not send your child to school when he/she is sick. Fever, vomiting, rashes, diarrhea, etc. are symptoms that a parent should check before sending a child to school. Tutor services are available for those who must be away from school for an extended period of time. If a child becomes ill in school, the parent will be called and asked to come and get the child. No child will be allowed to go home without the parent being notified. The child will not be allowed to walk home unless the parent requests it. If a parent is not available, the person you have listed on the Emergency Card will be called.
  4. Vision Screening: Vision screening is done as a matter of routine each year for Gr. K, 1, 3, & 5. It is important that the child be taken to an eye doctor if he/she has a defect. The success or failure of his/her efforts in school may depend upon immediate attention being given or neglected. Postponing the matter only adds to the injury of vision.
  5. Audio Screening: The County Health Department provides hearing screening each year for Gr. K, 1, 2, & 3. If your child has a problem, you will be contacted and advised by them concerning what you should do for your child. Also, if you suspect a problem, please call to request this service.
  6. Accidents: If your child is injured at school, we will make every effort to notify you immediately. If we cannot contact you and emergency treatment is needed, we, with your permission, will call a doctor or transport the child to the doctor. You have given this permission on the Emergency Form that was completed at the Open House. A report of the injury and the action taken will be kept on file in the school office.
  7. Head Lice: Head lice are a problem, especially during the fall. It takes all of us working together to control them. Please check your child's head on a regular basis each week, especially behind the ears and at the back of the head and neck. Nits (eggs) are firmly attached to the hair and cannot be flicked off like dandruff. You can wash your hair every day with ordinary shampoo and still have head lice. If your child has lice:
    1. Use special shampoo.
    2. Wash bedding in hot water (above 150 F) and dry in a hot dryer or iron with a hot iron. Wash and dry recently worn clothing (including coats, caps, and scarves) in hot temperatures. Clothing or bedding that cannot be washed may be dry cleaned or sealed in a double plastic bag for two weeks.
    3. Disinfect combs, brushes, and similar items by:
      • soaking in the medicated shampoo for 4 min. or,
      • soaking in a 2% Lysol solution for one hour or,
      • boiling water for 10 minutes.
    4. Clean floors, furniture and carpeting with thorough vacuuming only. The use of insecticide sprays is not recommended.
